Why Work at a Credit Union?
What are Credit Unions?
Credit unions are financial institutions similar to banks. However, a credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative. Credit unions are controlled by their members and operated on the principle of people helping people. Credit unions provide members credit at competitive rates as well as other common financial services like checking accounts, credit cards, debit cards, and loans.
Credit unions offer all of the same products as banks, but don’t have any outside shareholders. Instead, the members are the shareholders. That means profits are reinvested in the members in the form of better rates on all accounts.

I Love My Credit Union Job!

Kristina H.
I started working as a Marketing Specialist at Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union after graduating from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Business. At the time, I really didn’t know what a credit union was. I just knew I wanted to one day do Investor Relations and hey, it was a financial institution so surely I’d learn a little about finances and investing.
Needless to say, we don’t always end up where we thought professionally. 😊Thirteen years later, I am now the Marketing Director and am so thankful for my Credit Union family.
Over the years, I’ve grown up, gotten married, had children, and through all of that, the Credit Union has truly been there to support me through each moment.
The philosophy of “People Helping People” isn’t just a saying. All these years later, I’ve realized it’s really a way of life. Our Credit Union puts family and employees first. You don’t find that many places and I’m very thankful to have found that right out of college!

I didn't know what a credit union was when I came to the interview. Now I want to tell everyone what a fantastic opportunity they are missing if they don't consider credit unions in their job search. There's an old saying in politics that goes, "If you're not at the table, you're on the menu."
Working in Governmental Affairs is about being at the table in the room where it happens, advocating every day to make it easier for credit unions to do their business: helping their members (customers, owners) achieve their financial dreams.

I entered into the workforce within the school system as the special education assistant for grades 7 through 12. This job was very rewarding, and I soon learned that service was my passion in life.
In 2013, I realized the opportunities for advancement were very limited in our small school and began to look at other avenues for long term careers. Upon a friend’s advisement, I left the education system and took a teller position at a local bank.
I soon began to understand that service and compassion were not the primary focus at this institution. While sharing my thoughts with a family friend, she encouraged me to reach out to a credit union.
Working for a community-based credit union has allowed me to meet people that I would have never met otherwise such as, state legislators, other credit union representatives, activists in the credit union movement. Our credit union also works with local charities as well.
